The tournament was first held in 1973 and has been played on green clay courts since 2001. The tournament is currently sponsored by Volvo Car USA and features a singles and doubles draw. Many top players have won the Charleston Open in the past, including Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Venus Williams, Justine Henin, Serena Williams, and Caroline Wozniacki.
The reigning champion is Madison Keys, who won the tournament in 2019. The 2020 edition of the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2022, the Credit One Bank Stadium on Daniel Island played host to the tournament. The stadium has the capacity to entertain up to 10,200 fans who love tennis.
